How I Spend My Sundays: Looking For Kanye West

Remember this guy….??

I remember the day I first heard “Through The Wire”; I was in my homey, Keith’s dorm at Howard University (West Towers to be exact). I was combing through the net and stumbled across this “You Hear It First” link from MTV News. The song played and I was hooked. “Through The Wire” was so playful but honest and extremely passionate at the same time.

From then on, Kanye, as he ever so lovingly put it, “raped the game young”. The culture, some of us, accepted him immediately. Others gradually came on board. He brought a new perspective to the game. Yeah he wore “snug” clothing, but he was ok with it. Yeah he wore bright attire, but he was ok with it. Yeah he never sold a narcotic a DAY in his life, but he was definitely ok with conveying his collegiate struggles to the masses.

Personally, and this is speaking from a fan’s perspective, I miss that Kanye. I miss Kanye smiling. I miss the passionate Kanye before accumulating the accolades and platinum plaques. Earlier today, I was chopping it up with them NMC boys and Kanye’s production (pre Graduation) came into play. After, I began scouring the internets for vintage Kanye material. I watched clip after clip and specifically remembered what I thought about Ye at that point in time.

I could babble on and on about what I miss about Kanye. I could sit here and tell you what I don’t like about him now, but it’s not my place to critique someone in that light because everyone changes at some point in life. This is drawn from a “FAN’s” mental- nothing more, nothing less. So instead of watching football (my Giants handled their business early anyway Giants 27 Chiefs 16) this is How I Spend My Sundays. ENJOY!

  1. Yea, I saw you post this earlier on Twitter. This shit sucks. In High School, dude was kinda my idol…No stannin, but he was. Now that I’m older and in college I’ve directed my idolization to people with more practical/traditional/rational jobs but that’s besides the point.

Ye used to stand out and have a certain sound passion and believe it or not humbleness to himself that carried over to his music. Granted he can’t make music that isn’t as relate-able anymore but for some reason I’m watchin these videos as if dude died.

  2. I thought this website was called You Heard That New. Why you posting old shit?

    • Why you mad?

      • lol I love how you assume everyone is mad cause of a negative or disagreeing response. Damn dude, assumptions need to be educated guesses, not just random shots at people.

        • Yeah, you’re mad.

          Go away.

          Actually, stay. We need you.

  3. It’s iight iLL, he obviously miss the point of the post. Yeah I was really trying to score “new” points with posting the making of “Late Registration”.

    *Walks out of room*

  4. Hey still makes fire.

  5. Damn I’m loving this! I can sooo relate – I was also chillin in my dorm room soph yr of college when I saw the Through the Wire vid come on MTV(went to computer afterwards to search vid on net and put on repeat-drove my roomate crazy lol)- been in love ever since – the only problem is it’s been so hard for me to stay in love with the new Ye. I’m patiently awaiting the return my different (but in a good way), humble (with a bit of cocky on the side), amazingly gifted artist I fell in love with.

  6. *applauds this post*

  7. LowKey, good lookin’ with this post. I understand exactly what you are getting at and I feel the sentiment but that Kanye is…well…dead to a certain extent. You can’t undo history and you certainly can’t undo the fact that that nigga blew. Can’t have the grimy gritty hungry mixtape sound when you have more money than God :( That Kanye might be dead IRL but he is still making the hot ish we love and his old “real” persona is still living in cyberspace. Change is inevitable, Obama proved that one. Paz.
