Audio: Symbolyc One Talks Producing Kanye’s “Power”

May 28, 2010 |  by  |  Q&A  |  1 Comment  |  Share  |

Hip-hop producer Symbolyc One from Waco, Texas; also 1/3rd of Strange Fruit Project and collaborated on the Art of One Mind album with Illmind, explains to MTV about how he linked up with Kanye West and scoring his new single, “Power” (co-produced by Kanye West).

“The way it came together, I work with Rhymefest. I did like four joints on his album. And one day, out the blue, I got a text from Rhymefest that said, ‘Kanye is loving your stuff, he said he’s about to change your life.’ Two days later, I got an e-mail that said my flight to Hawaii leaves in three hours! So I was on a flight, and it just happened like that. I went down and stayed for like two weeks, banged out some joints.

The ‘Power’ joint that we did, it was actually a track that I already made and gave to Rhymefest, and he just so happened to play it for Kanye in the studio and he loved it. So when I got out to Hawaii, Kanye had already recorded to it.”

A month later, S1 returned to Hawaii and heard “Power” again, this time with more polish added by ‘Ye, who co-produced the song. However, S1 picked the sample that drives the record: a snippet of British progressive rock band King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man.

Photo Opp: Lloyd Banks & Tony Yayo Perform At NYC's BB King's Lounge

May 28, 2010 |  by  |  PHOTO OPP  |  No Comments  |  Share  |

This might have been one of the most random evenings ever. The other night on my way to Port Authority to trek back to Jersey, I noticed a pretty long line on 42nd St. Not paying attention, I continued to type away in my blackberry and think nothing of it.

I noticed the demographic in this line was pretty hip-hop-esque so I started looking for street team members to see which artist was performing. As I came closer to the entrance, I saw my good friend Renee from G-Unit which caused me to think “Banks or Yayo is probably performing tonight.” Low and behold, they both were.

Though I had about an hour and a half until my boss came, I opted to slide over to Port Authority anyway since I’d already been partying earlier in the evening. As I began to head up the block, I then bump into DJ Envy and the light skinned prick convinced me to come hang for a minute.

So, we dipped through the crowd, headed downstairs and slipped backstage in which we then started to discuss the process of how so many records are leaked with Renee and Nelson from G-Unit. Of course I won’t reveal the actual logistics to the convo, but it was pretty god damn funny.

And since I’m not good with name dropping, I’ll let Ernest’s photos tell the story. Check out his flicks below.
