#UnSignedSundays: Rich Nitty – Hustle Hard

February 20, 2011 |  by  |  UNSIGNED SUNDAYS  |  No Comments  |  Share  |

Oakland native, Rich Nitty gives us his take over Ace Hood’s “Hustle Hard” offering. The 26 year old who now relocated to NYC after he got accepted to the New York School for Film and Television to pursue a career in acting but later turned his talents to music. After graduating and heading to VA, Nitty slid back to NYC to get things cracking with the music through the hustling of the nightlife as a promoter. I think we’ll see more of Rich around these parts.

Not the BEST thing smoking, but I’m definitely feeling the vibe Breeze is giving. “Hate Is Love” is featured on Mantana’s You Only Live Twice street album which is available now. Thoughts?

#UnSignedSundays: Will Ave – Rodeo

Look who’s back for another round on #UnSignedSundays? Yep, Will Ave. The Miami native takes us to the clubs on this post with a joint called “Rodeo.” I wasn’t a fan of the title or the hook, but his delivery and the BEAT are pretty much in sync to the T. This could use a quick 32 from someone tho. Hmmm….

Bruno Mars On Songwriting: “To Me, The Best Songs Are Like A Joke.”

February 20, 2011 |  by  |  NEWS  |  No Comments  |  Share  |

Seven-time Grammy nominee is sitting comfortably in his lane right now. Despite his legal woes, the Hawaii native has a bevy of chart toppers under his belt, a debut album that projects timeless material, co-wrote two of 2010′s most contagious anthems (Cee-Lo Green’s “Fuck You” and his collabo with B.o.B. “Nothin On You”) and is slated to hit the road with label mate Janelle Monae.

So, how does he do it? How does one compose such awesome material? Well, Toure sat down with the Atlantic Records hit maker to discuss his musical roots, which derived from his Puerto Rican father, his love for Elvis Presley, his false start over at Motown when he was 18, working with Cee-Lo Green and being nominated for seven Grammy’s.

Below, Mars breaks down the process of his songwriting talents and how he compares writing the perfect song, to him, is handled like telling a great joke.

“You know, it’s always different. But to me the best songs are like a joke. Like, you have to set it up in a way that no one’s ever heard it before. And then the hook is the punch line. So in, “Nothin On You” , I say, “Beautiful girls all over the world/I could be chasing/but my time would be wasted. They got nothing on you.” I ain’t saying nothing that aint never been said in a million love songs before. But I feel like the way its set up is what makes it magical. I’m telling a girl, “Look, there’s beautiful girls all over the world.” Already that’s different. How you gonna tell a girl that’s beautiful there’s beautiful girls all over the world? I could be chasing them, but they got nothing on you. There’s the punch line.”

VIBE’s February/March issue should be on newsstands this week.

Don Cannon: “It’s A Shame They Shut Down The Blogs.”

February 20, 2011 |  by  |  NEWS  |  2 Comments  |  Share  |

In the February/March issue of VIBE Magazine, Team VIBE assembled probably one of the GREATEST survey’s in regards to how music is consumed by its consumer. They also spoke to handful of industry personnel and consumers about the matter as well.

Below, we have Don Cannon speaking on what might actually happen if music blogs were to be shut down completely. Check it out.

I think the record industry would crash. If you’re in a real rural spot like Arkansas or Mississippi, where they don’t have billboards, where do they find the record? It’s a shame they shut down the blogs, because that’s all we have to stay up. That’s part of the marketing scheme now.”

VIBE’s February/March issue should be on newsstands this week.
