My Night: Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Rolling Papers’ Album Release Concert At Roseland Ballroom In NYC

March 30, 2011 |  by  |  LIVE PERFORMANCES, Mac Miller, MY NIGHT, VIDEOS  |  2 Comments  |  Share  |

Ok real quick: When I was at BET, I would write these LONG and DETAILED recaps of my nights on the mean streets of NYC whenever I attened an industry function. I would be filled with some random encounters, highs and lows, what type of alcoholic beverage I consumed and who I flirted with or the other way around. I maybe did it once or twice around these parts, but then I stopped. But last night? Last night at Wiz’s album release concert at The Roseland Ballroom needed that type of commentary. So, let me walk you through “My Night” @ Wiz’s Album Release Concert.

Let me commence this tale with I had NO idea Wiz was having an album release concert. Well wait, let me take that back – Trae The Truth hit me on the jack and told me the day before he would be in NYC performing with Wiz the next night but I didn’t put two and two together because I’m pretty much a moron when it comes to connecting the dots with certain things. Anyway, I just landed at the crib from Washington, D.C. and decided to hit the city for The Breakfast Club’s (DJ Envy, Angela Yee and C. Tha God) event at The House Of Henessey which was sponsored by Belvedere (Whad up, Dolores B?) and catered by Evelyn’s Kitchen.

Niles G and I stumbled inside the swanky 2nd floor venue while debating world domination. After about an hour and a half of mingling and consuming 5 Magical Punches (don’t ask me what was in them) I got the call from Trae urging me to head over to the venue. Clearly I was a bit under the influence, but that never stops me from an unexpected mission so I hoped in the closets cab and made my way to The Roseland Ballroom. Trae told me to slide in through the back way because it would be insanely impossible to get me from the front entrance. Good move, Trae. I walked down the block while talking to Trae trying manuever my skinny, drunk ass inside.

Trae and the security guard he was with shouted at me below as if they were in some project building yelling down to a crackhead. “YO NIGGA, WE UP HERE.” I laughed and waited patiently while witnessing some young groupies figure out ways to get backstage. Cherry, the name of the security guard who came and got me, whisked me in the front of the line and put his arm around me like I was a surprise guest of the night. I didn’t get why, but hey as long as I got in I could careless.

We rushed upstairs and I met Trae by the entry. He looked a bit nervous but nonetheless he was cool. He played me his new single with Wyclef from their new project that’s coming out June 7th and explained to me how he was a bit hesiant on doing the project because he never rocked out with Wyclef like that, but in the end it all worked out. The single sounded pretty dope as well. We chopped it up for a couple more minutes just shooting the shit about any and everything. Cherry was still close by and told me that my badge would get me access to anywhere in the facility so I could roam about. Trae was talking with some of his other folks he brought in so I made my way down the “Taylor Hall.”

In one door, there was a slew of Taylor Gang soliders who ALL had red cups in their right hands celebrating the release of their leaders debut project. Most, if not all, had on a pair of Chuck Taylors. I did too so I fit right in lol. But then again I didn’t. My buzz had worn off and I kept getting funny stares from some of the guys so I posted up near the wall and attempted to blend in. By this time I spotted TV who was sitting on a stool outside Wiz’s dressing room.

A flock of folks were streaming in and out of the room. I couldn’t tell who was who. You had your record executives and their friends. Then you had your string of groupies and THEIR friends. And then you had the immediate Taylor Gang family and THEIR friends lol. I was soaking it all in. TV hated the drink concoction she was holding so she gave it to me. Her cup was full might I add so I’m assuming she only took one sip. Tanqueray, Gatorade and Sprite. Hmm, tastey. My buzz was back.

Flash was roaming about snapping pictures like his life depended on it. I was proud. He tried to man up on me when he handed me a cup and demanded “Yo, taste this.” I looked in it, sipped some and he immediately barked “Yeah, straight Gin nigga.” I looked at him and said, “It’s like 60 ice cubes in here.” He replied, “Nah, but its straight Gin.” I pointed down to my cup which had NO ice in it and he replied “Iight, you got that.”  I dapped him up, asked if he was ok and he went back to work.

While feeling the effects of my Red Cup concoction, I peaked inside Wiz’s room to which I was greeted with the backside of Amber Rose. Good god, man. I hate the way she speaks but DAMN if I don’t love the way she walks. Her dress, which wrapped her body OH SO FUCKING TIGHTLY was a sherbert decoration. She sported some black shades and toted a stoge. Yuck, I hate girls who smoke cigarettes. But hey, we all love what we love. I did a double take and decided if I didn’t leave that area, I would be gawking at shorty’s tushi all night. Plus, them Taylor Gang niggas were looking at me strange. Maybe they weren’t. Maybe the mixture of my 6 Belvy’s from earlier and my Tanqueray concoction was playing tricks on me. Who knows. Hey Mac Miller’s onstage, let’s check him out.

I caught the tail end of his performance, “Donald Trump” to be exact and his energy was on level 10. I was by myself but I still had enough courage to put my hand in the air to sing some of the lyrics. Why not right? Right. I walked further down the walk way when I got a BBM from my homey Mel saying she was inside, but downstairs with my other homey Kaz. Again, I’m dolo and love going on missions so I gladly accepted her request in finding them by the bar.

Let me tell you….I’ve been to quite a few rap shows over the past 3 years but this didn’t look like any previous show I’d been to. The crowd inside The Roseland Ballroom was that off a Frat House. Matter fact, it looked like the FIRST party of the semester at Rutgers University. Sprinkled with a few African Americans, that crowd was predominantly white. 18-24 year old white kids who look like they snuck out of their parents house to see the Negro rapper and his gangster friends rap about weed and gin. I was amazed. And there were THOUSANDS of them, well maybe not thousands but you get the point. Could you believe it, I looked like the odd ball. Well maybe that’s because I had a red cup and a backstage badge slapped on my chest. Whatever.

After searching high and low for Mel and Kaz, I headed back upstairs because I couldn’t find neither one. Come to find out, I was at the wrong bar. Whatever, Mel doesn’t know how to give directions lol. We all met up back upstairs and waited for Wiz to hit the stage. This was the part when the DJ started playing those record to get the crowd amped. Yeah, we were ready for Wiz. Swizz rolled through with spikes on his shoes and Waka Flocka and French Montana posted up in the back taking in Wiz’s ambiance. I heard some other famous rhyme spitter was there, but by this time I was drunk as shit so I didn’t care. Oh and I was also getting threatened on Twitter because of this Tweet. Life is awesome aint it lol?

As for the show? Well, you can watch the clip put together by my big homey Potential. Everything I didn’t say about Wiz’s show that I WANTED to say could be seen in that 8 minute clip. Ok? Cool! Shouts to Trae The Truth, Cherry, Flash, Potential, Techie, TV, Kaz, Mel, Mike (sorry about that Beyonce stuff lmao), June, Crespo, Sowmya, Marsha, DJ Quiz, Xilla and everyone else I saw lol.

Sincerely

Low “No more Gin and Belvy for me” Key
