YHTN: New Years Beat Battle Finals

December 30, 2011 |  by  |  CONTESTS, LET THE BEAT BUILD  |  76 Comments  |  Share  |

Clearly we should do this more often. We had almost 100 submissions, which equates to me having to listen to almost 200 beats. It was great fun, and there are some super talented producers out there. Just to be transparent the key things I was looking for besides “hotness”:

  1. Did it sound real? There is a sound that feels right, like someone could actually hop on this and make something that didn’t sound like someone just exported an 8 bar Fruityloops loop. This has a lot to do with drums that actually fit the track, and synths and samples being properly tempo synced.
  2. Is it rap/singable? Basically could someone make a song from this. Are the bars formatted in a way that makes sense?
    example: intro/chorus/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/halfverse/chorus/chorus/outro
  3. Can a vocal actually sit in this somewhere?
  4. Is the mix decent? A lot of producers can’t mix. Learn to mix. People want to hear the fullness of your records.

YHTN Beat Battle Open Submissions

December 29, 2011 |  by  |  CONTESTS, INSTRUMENTALS, LET THE BEAT BUILD  |  No Comments  |  Share  |

UPDATE: Tons of entries… wow. We’re now closed! Check tomorrow at Noon to see the picks, and to vote.

I was looking around and no one has been offering any outlet to producers lately on mainstream sites. Production is 70% of a song these days, so I figure let’s get some instrumental action on YHTN. Tomorrow we’ll do a New Years beat battle. Here’s the deal:

  1. Producers of the world submit two (2) of your beats in MP3 format to beats@youheardthatnew.com
  2. They have to be submitted by Midnight EST on December 29th, 2011 (Today).
  3. I will listen to all of them (for real I promise) and will pick 5 beats by 5 different producers for the YHTN readership to vote on tomorrow.
  4. The voting will last all weekend and the winner will be announced at Noon EST on Monday, January 2nd.
Prizes!
  • The 1st place winner will get a $25 iTunes or Amazon Giftcard (Winner’s Pick) and automatically get his or her beat placed in the next competition.
  • 2nd place will probably get clowned in the comments.
  • 3rd place should just be happy to be here.
Small details: Do not have anyone rapping on them, I will not be putting your crew on today. Don’t send me a hulkshare link, send me the MP3. Feel free to Tag them up if you want, but unless the tags are somehow awesome this will probably make me hate the track. You can send less than 2 (1) but not more than 2 beats.
For all the readers voting will be explained in the competition post tomorrow. Now send me some ear candy… I got these Beats headphones for Christmas and I want to hear the magic. – Tom (@tmcleod3)

New Series Alert: Let The Beat Build

I’m going to keep this shit straight and to the point: New producer? Can’t find a valuable outlet to showcase that talent of yours? Ok, today’s your lucky mothafucking day. If you’re serious about your craft, in which 80 percent of you are, then I’m sure you just finished making a beat. But instead of hopping on Twitter and tweeting how big of a banger you just made, why not record the process upload it to Youtube or Vimeo and slide it over here so the WORLD can see. And while you’re at it, send the COMPLETE prdouct in MP3 form.

You know why? Because if in FACT that beat is a scorcher, your clientele now starts to grow. And not with starving artists looking for hot production, but now A&R’s, managers and everyone in between with a job in the music industry is now taking notice. So, long story short: A.) Create some hot fire. B.) Upload it to Youtube or Vimeo. C.) Email me at Lkuhtn@gmail.com with a brief description of the beat and why you created it, who you are and where you’re from. There’s no deadline so send away. And D.) Send the finished product in MP3 format. Easy enough? GOOD! GO! Oh and if you need some inspiration, scroll down below….that should help!
