Don Cannon: “It’s A Shame They Shut Down The Blogs.”

February 20, 2011 |  by  |  NEWS  |  2 Comments  |  Share  |

In the February/March issue of VIBE Magazine, Team VIBE assembled probably one of the GREATEST survey’s in regards to how music is consumed by its consumer. They also spoke to handful of industry personnel and consumers about the matter as well.

Below, we have Don Cannon speaking on what might actually happen if music blogs were to be shut down completely. Check it out.

I think the record industry would crash. If you’re in a real rural spot like Arkansas or Mississippi, where they don’t have billboards, where do they find the record? It’s a shame they shut down the blogs, because that’s all we have to stay up. That’s part of the marketing scheme now.”

VIBE’s February/March issue should be on newsstands this week.

Don Cannon & Jeezy – Trap Or Die II (Artwork)

April 28, 2010 |  by  |  ARTWORK, NEWS  |  1 Comment  |  Share  |

Cannon spoke to XXL today and dropped some info on what to expect from Jeezy’s Trap Or Die II mixtape.

With Young Jeezy getting ready to release the sequel to his seminal Trap or Die mixtape this week, XXLMag.com chopped it up with the host of the project, DJ/producer Don Cannon, to get all the pertinent details.

Cannon’s former Aphilliates partner DJ Drama, who helmed the original mixtape, was initially supposed to host Trap or Die 2. But according to Cannon—who left the Aphilliates in 2008—a scheduling conflict prevented Drama from handling the project. “I think there was time constraints,” he said. “And Jeezy wanted to have it put out pretty quickly because it’s [part] of the promo of the album.”

As to how he was brought on board, Cannon said he happened to be working on the Snowman’s upcoming album, Thug Motivation 103. “I think he needed a lil’ help picking some songs and doing a couple of things,” he shared. “So in the midst of me doing his album… he was like, ‘You know what, you might as well host this joint.’ So from there, once he said that, you know, I was down… I picked the music [and] I put the whole marketing/viral thing together for it.”

Cannon revealed a star-studded guest list for TOD2, which includes Bun B, Scarface, Trick Daddy and Birdman. But the track that he predicts will be the “sleeper of the year” is Jeezy’s song with Clipse. “Everybody’s gonna talk about [it]…that’s a big record,” he explained. “’Cause I don’t know anybody that can talk that street mentality talk other than him and them. So for them to collab on a track that’s really important.”

On the production tip, Cannon recruited longtime Jeezy associate Shawty Redd, Drumma Boy and of course he provided one of his own beats for the song “D Boys.”

He said, while there are mostly original songs on the disc, YJ dropped verses over Snoop’s “I Wanna Rock,” Trey Songz’s “Say Ahh” and Birdman’s “Play Ball.”

Trap or Die 2 will be available this Friday (April 30).

Lola says:

For this, I decided to bother DJ Don Cannon while he was working in the studio and get some “honest” answers and feedback from him. If you’ve never watched a Cannon interview before, or never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, please keep in mind that he is a character and loves to crack jokes and have a good time. I think it was one of our most entertaining #iChatsessions due to the fact that we were really just conversating as if we would have if the session had not been recorded.

Cannon talks about everything from his mixtapes with Mack Maine, Rock City, Cool Kids, to producing for artists like Jeezy and Ludacris, to his new sex symbol diet, to T.I. coming out of jail to his favorite liquor, to him having a show with 50 Cent to his favorite rapper in ‘09, to the type of ladies he likes and more!

Towards the end of the interview the signal messed up and we kept on freezing so just take it for what it is. A weak internet signal at the DTP studios [where Cannon was working].
